CADES – A possible hit-and-run vehicle accident in Williamsburg County Monday night resulted in one fatality. Williamsburg County Coroner Harrison McKnight said Sonya Burgess, 39, died in the accident. Burgess was Kingstree High School's girls basketball head coach, as well as the school's athletic director and volleyball coach.

Jaguars aiming to finish what Burgess started

FLORENCE — Theodis Faison did his best to try to get Sonya Burgess the girls basketball job at Kingstree a decade ago.

Now, he and his players will look to carry out the journey Burgess started. The Jaguars take on Bishop England today in the Class 2A girls lower state final with Burgess’ memory firmly entrenched in their minds.

Burgess died Monday evening in a hit-and-run car crash less than 24 hours before the team’s third-round playoff game against Lake City. After a discussion, Faison, who has been the team’s JV coach the last 10 years, and the team decided to go ahead with the game.
