#5 Strom Thurmond at #1 Saluda

Post by TIM »

Huge game in Region III AA with playoff implications. Saluda is 6-0 on the season and Strom Thurmond has improved to 4-2 after dropping their first two games. This has been a heated rivalry for 60+ years. To throw gas on the fire, 1st year Rebel Head Coach Andrew Webb was the OC at Saluda over the last several years and he even brought an assistant or two with him to the "peach fields".

Winner of this game is front runner for the region championship and that #1 seed is appealing in the playoffs. R3 #1 has homefield for the first 3 rounds of the playoffs and will matchup with the #5 seed from Region 1 in round 1. All is not lost for the loser of Friday night's contest, they'll just more than likely be taking a trip to Abbeville in the 3rd round of the playoffs, instead of the upperstate championship game.

Saluda has a two game win streak in the series. Rebels haven't beaten the Tigers since 2018. Better get there early if you want a seat.

last five years in the series:
2021 Saluda 52-20
2020 did not play (covid shorten year)
2019 Saluda 22-21
2018 Strom Thurmond 30-19
2017 Strom Thurmond 35-6

Strom Thurmond leads the all time series 41-13-3

Big game for sure early in the season.

Big question is how far has ST come back?? Saluda is one of the driver seat teams for the last many years.... ST not so.

Did not realize Saluda's OC went to ST. Been wondering why ST hadn't been trying to get either him or even the Saluda HC. Seems the HC at Saluda is happy where he is, surely he has received interest from elsewhere.

ST is on the way back, not fully there yet though. It's been really cool watching the progress/improvements each game this season. Saluda has the upperhand at this point, no doubt, but i think ST should make a good game of it.

IMO...we will see ST become a major player over the next few years.

That’s why I didn’t recognize the rankings
Max preps is way off on a lot of their rankings.

Glad that ST has a new coach. I attended the former coach's first game at ST and sat right in front of the press box. His assistants were cursing and swearing out the window like they were at the club. It was disgusting, people in the stands could hear every word. Glad that he is gone.
