Too many teams making the playoffs:

Post by Rebel-Fan-74 »

As of this moment:

11 of the 32 games tonight in the 4A & 5A pick 'em have a team getting no votes from our pickers as the winner tonight and another 8 games have only one person thinking the team will win.

Only 6 of the visiting teams are favorites in 4A&5A pick 'em with two tied, with Clover and Greer being the biggest home underdogs out of this group of pickers at 19-1 against them.

I think it just shows the obvious unbalance among the playoff teams when this many make the Playoffs.

Tomorrow, we will see if this theory holds true when we have all the scores from the games.

Looking at Doodles projections for 1A is way heavy when you see how many points some of the teams are favored. In 29 of 32 games, his favored team is favored by double digits!

CLASS 1-A UPPER BRACKET
CHRIST CHURCH 282.6 MCBEE 187.9 ….. 47

Someone call Jerome and the rest of the SCHSL! A bunch of old farts have picked the higher seeds!!! The playoffs have too many teams. Giving kids the opportunity to play another game(extra game for winners and losers) is too much for these guys to endure!

Do the right thing, Jerry Singleton! These men have suffered enough with less traffic at the message boards than past years. Not an extra game for a bunch of kids!

How did that play out? The favored team won 15 out of 16 games, the only exception, the team favored by only 2 points lost:

Last week was a glorified week 11. Technical the playoffs start this week like it used too.

Using the too many teams logic would have kept the 2009 Clinton State championship team out of the playoffs. The region that year ended in a 4 way tie for first. Due to the tie breaker, Clinton was a 4 seed. Clinton went on to beat 4 number 1 seeds and a number 2 seed to win the State title.

I know a lot of people hate it, but I'm a big fan of some kind of points system for who makes the playoffs. Maybe the region champs are automatic, then the best 12 teams in the state regardless of region finish get it. Seed it 1-16.

Any "point" system has to fair and equal across the board and not reward schedules that are made far ahead of the playoffs. That is why the "point" system was done away with. A team can only play the teams that are on their schedules. Some Districts mandate games to be played that are a direct detriment to any "point" system. If you win the games that are on your schedule, you should be rewarded. If not, then some subjective system will always be unfair to all. There is no perfect solution other than as Al Davis famously said, "Just win baby!"

Maybe cutting the playoffs from 32 per class to 16 is too drastic. Maybe 24 is better, but with that number, there is the same number of weeks involved. Going to 16 saves a week, allowing for 11 games a year for everyone.
The "Godfather" didn't whine like The "Slobfather" is doing, when he got INDICTED!!!!!

Why are people so eager to take a game away from HS kids? There are limited opportunities in a kids life to play football and once it’s over it can never really be recreated. Why do we want to do that?

You can play basketball, golf, tennis, baseball, etc in rec leagues/intramural leagues, but not tackle football.
