BOWL PROJECTIONS

I was looking at MSN.COM and ESPN and CBSSPORTSLINE.COM and made a list of the bowl projections.

Here is the list: (click on the attachment to see larger version)

Couple of comments. As with all projections, these are subject to change several times, but it appears that all of them are projecting a Clemson win over South Carolina to have the Tigers as an AT LARGE to the BCS. I'm a Gamecock fan, so naturally I don't like that, but it could happen.

Four out of five have the Gamecocks in central Florida on New Years Day (Capital One or Outback) while one has them playing New Year's Eve in the Chick-fil-A in Atlanta....against Duke.

Duke could win the Coastal and still be the 4th team selected by the bowls (ending up in the Belk Bowl) while Miami gets the Chick-fil-A???

Some match ups that I like at first glance...
Notre Dame -vs- Northern Illinois (what a difference a year makes)
Ohio State -vs- Oregon
Oklahoma -vs- Michigan
Baylor -vs- Texas A&M (over or under on pass attempts may be 225)
LSU -vs- Oklahoma State (or the Les Miles Bowl)

I didn't realize OSU was bowl eligible already. Talk about a slap on the hand.

I'd have to check the bowl math(which is the worst kind of math), but I think it's possible for Clemson to lose to Carolina and still go to the Orange.

Let's see.

There are 10 BCS spots.
Six of them are going to conference champions(Clemson will not be in this subset).
One Non-AQ should get in(Either Northern illinois or Fresno State)

Then it comes down to the at-large's from the Top 14 to fill things out
Stanford should get in.
Auburn, Missouri, Alabama, A&M, or South Carolina should get in from the SEC
Then it would come down to either a two loss Clemson team or the highest ranked non-champion Big 10 school. If Michigan State beats Ohio State in the Big 10 title game, Clemson would not get in.

All that being said, GO COCKS! and GO SPARTANS!.

EDIT: They definitely have Clemson beating Carolina for this to happen. Stanford would definitely get in over clemson if they both had two losses.

OK. After this weekend's games, and upon seeing the latest BCS standings, here it how I see the BCS games playing out.

BCS Championship Game:

#1 Florida State
#2 Ohio State

Orange Bowl:

Central Florida
Alabama

Rose Bowl:

Stanford
Northern Illinois

Sugar Bowl:

Auburn
Baylor

Fiesta Bowl:

Oklahoma State
Arizona State

Here is how I arrived at my picks:

1st-The Orange Bowl gets the first choice for replacing their host (FSU) who is lost to the NCG. By rule, they MUST pick an automatic qualifier. That means that either UCF (AAC), or Northern Illinois (MAC) will be the host of the Orange Bowl.

2nd-The Rose Bowl then must pick a team to replace one of it's lost hosts (Ohio State). By rule, they MUST pick an automatic qualifier, and that leaves ONLY Northern Illinois.

3rd-The Sugar Bowl is hosted by the SEC Champion (Auburn).

4th-The Fiesta Bowl is hosted by the Big 12 Champion (OK State).

5th-This year, the Orange Bowl gets the first pick of the remaining three open slots. Alabama is the obvious choice.

6th-This year, the Sugar Bowl gets the second at-large pick. I see an 11-1 Baylor as the obvious choice, and the geography definitely helps against such other teams as Clemson, Michigan State, or Arizona State.

7th-This year, the Fiesta Bowl gets the final at-large choice. I see Arizona State as the logical choice here.

Now the outcome of each one of the Conference Championship games as well as the Bedlam Game, will determine the actual automatic qualifiers and hosts for several games, but this is just how I see things working out. Northern Illinois in the Rose Bowl.........never in my lifetime would I have ever expected that!

Well it appears that as usual, I was wrong.........I misread the rules about how the Orange and Rose Bowls would be allowed to pick to replace the 2 teams lost to the NCG.

That being said, it may well wind up this way then:

NCG:

FSU Vs. Ohio State

Orange Bowl:

Alabama vs. Clemson

Rose Bowl:

Stanford vs. Baylor

Sugar Bowl:

Auburn vs. Central Florida

Fiesta Bowl:

Oklahoma State vs. Northern Illinois

Looking at that lineup, I have to say that I am not impressed with a single one of those games.

Maybe Michigan State will beat Ohio State Saturday and Missouri will beat Auburn and Duke will upset Florida State and the BCS will be the Big Crappy System and who knows who will end up playing for the National Championship

It is indeed a shame that an organization with as much clout as the NCAA continues to allow so much money to dictate policy over an organization that is built upon the premise of amateurism. The "BCS" is a shameful disgrace of a solution to that problem. Aside from the so-called Football Bowl Subdivision, the NCAA has a tournament style championship in place to decide it championships. That covers all sports, not just football. Yet FBS level football is the bellcow sport for the organization.

Could it be that the fear of losing valuable dollars to it's member institutions through a FBS tournament that is driving the refusal to change to a system based upon common sense and rationale? What other factors could possibly be so strong as to hold back the inevitable switch? Any opinions?

I think you hit it on the head... $$$$

But, you would think that the television rights alone to the Div Playoffs would be enough to make up for the "bowl system" we currently have.

I personally think an 8 team playoff would suffice and if you don't make the 8 teams, you are eligible for one of the other BOWLS. Now, you would lose 8 teams from the pool, so some bowls may have to go bye bye, but come on, aren't they a few that should be gone any way?

8 teams would mean 7 games:
(Using this year as a guide)

Conf Championship Dec 7th

Playoffs:
Week One - 4 games (Dec 21st)
Week Two - 2 games (Dec 28th)
Week Three - 1 game (Jan 6th)

Reasons it will not happen:
#1 - Risk of injury to players - especially the NFL bound players
#2 - "TOO MUCH TIME AWAY FROM CLASS" - Yeah, I believe this one
#3 - No one has offered them enough money without losing control of the system.

I do not buy into any of those excuses. The FCS now has a 24 team playoff format that uses a 5 week playoff time span. If that does not take away too much class time, risk injuries, or create enough of a chance to make loads of money, then a simple 8 or 16 team playoff certainly wouldn't.

I submit that it would be the taking away of huge payouts to corporate sponsors and replacing them with huge payouts to both the NCAA and it's member institutions, that is the controlling factor.

After all, who would want to spend tons of money to see the "Fedex Orange Bowl" if the 2 teams playing were Florida Tech and Mississippi A&M?

Just to clarify, those are not "my" reasons, it is what I expect they would say....

I don't believe any of it myself....
