Longest region road trip in this proposal is Sumter and North Augusta...115 miles... About a 2 hour drive

That is the problem with 5 classes, it spreads the schools out pretty thin. If they put 48 in 5A there will be less in the lower classes where the schools are even more spread-out. Additionally, the smaller schools are less able to afford all those long trips for all sports.

I've been shuffling schools between classes and trying to organize them into regions, and I'm still struggling with the 4A and 3A regions. My (first) 5A proposal is below. 32 teams in 6 regions.

Here's a map, it's still a work-in-progress.

T L Hanna High School
Easley High School

Spring Valley High School
Sumter High School
West Florence High School
Carolina Forest High School

Summerville High School

32 teams, I'm thinking 16 make the playoffs. The top 2 from regions 1-5, the top 3 from region 6. Three at-large.

Very nice Band Dad........I like it. When you take into consideration that Carolina Forest has Fort Dorchester and Lexington on their current schedule.....It want have much more of an impact on the travel the football team already does by adding Spring Valley and Blythewood. CF just needs to schedule local teams for out of region play. I don't see a problem with it.

I'm hearing from some coaches that 40 seems to be the "magic number" most coaches are shooting for tho.

If you go to 40, you would be adding 6 upper state schools and two lower state schools. I tried 32, came up with about the same thing Band Dad came up with. I went with seeing how to make things better for CF, as well as the schools that play them, even though CF would be more affected. I got to 42, but the midlands region became a problem. That's how mine got up to 48

I have no problem with that 32 team proposal though. I like it.

If they go with a 32 team 5A, here's a map of 4A with the next 48 schools. (School sizes: 1119 to 1696)

Even with 48 schools it is difficult to piece together reasonably compact regions.

Here's a preliminary map of 3A. 48 schools, school sizes 710 to 1106.

That will leave 40 in 2A and 45 in 1A, although not all of them have football teams.

In this layout Bishop England is the smallest school in 3A, Christ Church is 6th smallest in 2A. That should make some people happy.
