That headline is a little misleading. Those sports are going to be absorbed into the high school. Charleston County was thinking about having the middle schools sponsor the middle school sports, but they are doing the same thing. Those schools could actually have multiple 7th and 8th grade teams now. Brookland-Cayce has done that in football for the past couple of years.

Actually not a bad idea, this will allow them to fuel their JV and Varsity programs with more players from the ranks of 9-10th graders and further develop them. Also, this gets them integrated into the HS system earlier which should improve play for some of the schools in the lower state that have underdeveloped feeder programs.

the more teams you have the more kids that get to play.

Combining 9th grade/JV, there may be 9th graders that are basically used as the scout team. They lose interest and quit.

Then you have schools that play 11th graders on JV, which is a physical mismatch vs. varsity players

Also depends on the size of the school. A school like Fort, Green weenies, Wandoe should have 3 teams. Any 5A team that cannot field 3 teams needs to take a hard look

I don't disagree with you when it comes to the 5A programs but I watched a number of 4A and smaller programs this season that were decimated by injuries and or turnout that killed their varsity teams. They simply could not compete against the larger teams in their divisions because of trying to have multiple programs (B-Team, JV, and Varsity). Some schools were forced to actually cancel B-Team programs and or JV programs to be able to have enough kids to field a solid team. This would allow them to increase and develop kids like it was done 40-50 years ago.

You are exactly right. The headline couldn't be more misleading. This move is actually a positive for the high schools (Ashley Ridge, and Fort D). They now get their hands on the student athletes immediately and can begin to put their "programs" in place at the middle school level. This makes the transition to playing JV and Varsity sports much easier.
