Can we not just go ahead and establish something like a core set of sports for the schools that don't play football to just be club sports? A and AA have that crap all the time. One school in this region for football only but in another for all other sports.

DWD should've been in same region with Wren and Westside. Could easily swap out Ft. Inn or Southside.

From a financial point of view, it makes the most sense to switch Daniel and Seneca with Fountain Inn and Southside. Daniel is one of the best travelling fan bases in all of South Carolina. Westside and Wren, and sometimes Seneca travel well also. Most fans will not make that trip to Blue Ridge, Berea, or even TR because they know how that is going to turn out. Likewise, people from TR, Berea, BR, and even Greer are not going to make that trip to Daniel. If you flip Daniel and Seneca with the aforementioned teams, that brings in so much more money. Daniel vs. Westside/Wren/Seneca and even Laurens, with Greg Porter, brings in a lot more money for the state and schools. If its been like recent years, Daniel vs. Westside/Wren/Seneca/Laurens will be a packed house. Lastly, it also saves money with travel. Daniel going to Wren, Westside, Seneca is all less than 30 minutes away. Daniel will be looking at nearly a 45 minute to hour drive to each game outside of Pickens/Seneca. Not sure who made the regions but seems like it could have been made with a little more common sense.

Y'all need to look at these region placements more broadly. It has nothing to do with money from football gates and whose fans fill away stadiums better; rather, it has everything to do with balanced travel across ALL sports.

If you look at these schools on a map, you see there's clusters with the five Tri-County schools and the six Greenville Co schools, as well as Laurens and Emerald in the Upstate. So it comes down to, "how do you equitably fit in Emerald and Laurens, specifically Emerald, into 6- and 7-team regions?"

Understanding that Fountain Inn is partially in Laurens County, Laurens and FI would naturally be tied together. That leaves Emerald. Travel distances from Emerald to Pickens, Seneca, and Daniel (and TR, Greer, and Berea, for that matter) are actually further than from Emerald to all of North Augusta, Midland Valley, Aiken, South Aiken, and Gilbert. Emerald to Seneca is the same distance as Emerald to Gray Collegiate. Just as pairing Emerald with Aiken Co schools would be unreasonable, pairing Emerald with any schools at or above Hwy 123 would be a non-starter. So we're left with a pretty easy and pretty well-balanced north/south alignment instead of east/west splits.

The total point-to-point travel distances (start at school A, to B, C... back to A) for these regions is 146 miles for Region 1 and 145 miles for Region 2. Aside from flipping which region is listed as 1 and 2, I'd say the HSL nailed it on AAAA altogether.

Daniel fans will travel to games based on quality not expense. They should appeal to go to the other region.
This is about money none of those schools other than Greer and Seneca will bring anything gate wise.
And the schsl didn’t nail it because they have watered down every classification in a complete money grab.
Btw explain why it’s ok for Clinton to be in one region for football and another region for all other sports. Make sense of that. They didn’t appeal for that but the schsl makes an arbitrary decision on it. That’s not nailing it.

Btw Emerald was in a region with Daniel and Seneca for 4 years about 10-12 years ago.

D-Dub, I said they nailed the AAAA region assignments, not all the classes. Lock in better on what I said, not what I didn't.

RE: Emerald - they at least had BHP and Palmetto relatively close to make that 2012 region work with the Oconee schools/Daniel. Now it's Laurens, FI, and Westside. It is what it is.

As for AA, this isn't a new, groundbreaking thing - there was a similar setup this past cycle in AA, where there was no Region 2 football at all, and ALL the schools were split for FB only (Abbeville and Ninety Six in Reg 1 w/ Liberty; Saluda in Reg 3 w/ Thurmond; Mid-Carolina and Newberry in Reg 4 w/ Gray). If they didn't have Clinton play in a separate region for football only this cycle, Region 1-AA would only have 4 FB teams, meaning 3 region games. There are only five FB-playing AA schools in the entire 864 area code, so there are no easy solutions.

All that said, to your broader point, I don't disagree with you about the overall number of classes, which leads to a watering down of current A-AAAA. We don't need six state champions. I feel we would be best served with four classes, 56 (+/-) schools per class, a 2.5x multiplier, 32-team seeded playoffs in all sports with no region pre-set brackets, and the elimination of Upper/Lower state.

Think what you like about 5A but the toughest region in 5A is Region 4....State Champ and Runner-up, Semi-finalist in 4A...playoff teams all. Weakest team last season was River Bluff...but still good enough to beat Dorman. Depending on who is in the "Big 5A and Little 5A", Region 4 might have both champions.
